Practicing the attention response

Giving attention is simple to explain in principle. It is about quietening down your mind so to give you the mental space to absorb what is in front of you. It is about having a child like mind which can see what is there - unfiltered (or at least not too powerfully filtered) by your automatic assumptions. It is about observing and not judging.

And best of all – you practice your attention response with the people you meet – friends, foes and strangers.

What will you learn as you practice?

    The belief that "we can change the world" without working on changing our own thoughts and habits first is an energy destroying belief. Let us walk away from this superficial, detrimental concept and concentrate instead on people in front of us, our families, our neighbours, our colleagues, and communities. Let us help each other to embody the values and divine qualities that we treasure in our hearts, and not worry about the transformation of a dictator in a far away land. Let us focus on transforming ourselves to be little islands of good caring people, doing right work, assisting where we can, maintaining peace and sanity. Even in the midst of the dark ocean that has emerged and continuing to storm around us...let us teach ourselves how to remain gentle, loving, giving, compassionate, decent and brave.... ...
