Déjà Vu all over Again
November 16, 2015

This is a famous quotation attributed to Yogi Berra the US baseball player. It makes me smile whenever I see it and I must confess to using it from time to time. It reflects the truth that we are always looking for reminders that what is happening right now is a repeat of what happened before. And indeed a lot of my therapy is about identifying these déjà vu experiences that keep coming up, when actually it’s not déjà vu but its different this time.

Incidentally that phrase (it’s different this time) is another one that is always escaping the lips of investors. That the economic cycle is different this time and you can invest all your money this time because the historical laws of investing do not apply this time. And politicians too – remember Gordon Brown who said he had abolished boom and bust?

I suppose the truth is that we need to be mindful always of both what is repeated and repeatable - and what is different this time. And getting that balance right can be the difference between success and failure or happiness and misery.

An open mind is attached to nothing yet welcomes everything. Many of us looking for a reason to be offended but when we are offended by someone or something it actually reflects our own state of being. It is never the self that is offended but always the illusion that the self has of itself that is affected by insult. We can only give and share what we have. If we have love and peace within that exactly what we will give out. If I am not attached, If I don't identify with the wrong image of myself there is no chance me being offended. I would therefore remain free and happy.

Sophia is a beautiful writer and I am happily sharing her work in my Feelbetter Newsletter.
