Who are you?
September 19, 2016

As the Brexit world rumbles on in the UK and in America we see the unfolding Donald Trump phenomenon with incredulity and not a little dismay (well I certainly do) – it is easy to sense that something is up.

And what is that? Well consider these two (out of six) universal human intuitions identified by Jonathon Haidt in his wonderful book - The Righteous Mind as they apply to our referendum. These two are loyalty/betrayal and authority/subversion. What we are seeing is that they go very closely together. Thus many UK voters felt that their national identity or loyalty as British or more accurately English was under threat – being betrayed in fact and hence there was a willingness to subvert the authority of their leaders who asked them to stick with the status quo, even under threat of a terrible price if they did not. And the converse too – that many who voted remain saw their identity as European or international and were therefore willing to forgive or simply not see the manifold faults of the European Union in practice.

Could that be the explanation of what is happening in America right now? If it is, then we had better get our heads around the idea of a Trump presidency.

Everything that our mind craves - love, friendship, fame, wealth, are all perishable if they are sought externally. The more we invest in what is perishable, the more we invite despair and grief into our lives. While we engage ourselves in our lives, naturally attachments to family, jobs, friends, lovers and children are formed. The level of our sufferings that stem from these attachments will vary according to our wisdom and understanding. If we have nothing higher to live for then we will be begging and grieving for love simply because a part of us is still empty. We’re often not sure of the cause of it but the feeling is undeniable. And we wait for something better to happen We check the comments on our Facebook posts, on twitter and check our emails countless times in a day. Just to have connection – a false promise that we are in fact loved, or a miraculous tip or trick to make all the pain go away!
