Autonomy is half way between
July 28, 2014

I have just read a good book – the Age of Absurdity by Michael Foley. It was good for a number of reasons but mainly because it very much agreed with what I believe. So a very wise man is Michael F. Having established Michael F’s wisdom it then meant I could really be open to what he was saying.

He talked of autonomy as being essential for us all to cultivate. But where does autonomy fit in? Well, we should understand autonomy as existing somewhere between being free and being entirely bound by our group identity. That freedom is only just a theoretical ideal but that we must also always be able to see ourselves as separate from the group – being able to detach and think for ourselves.

Next time I will explore this idea in relation to the Scottish independence vote - now soon upon us.

best wishes
