You will notice a different blue logo (rather than the green) on this newsletter – but it is still me – Andrew Richardson.

Over these past few months I have been building a new website – Feelbetter Counselling East London It is quite big (well to me it is enormous) and very much reflects who and what I am as a therapist and broader than that too.

My hope is that the website will be a resource for all. There is for example a place for anyone to contribute to the site. And I will also be adding bells and whistles and regularly updating it.

This newsletter will also from time to time, dip into useful material from the site.

Healers or Menders

It is well known that expectancy triggers our in built capacity to heal and this is evident in the power of the placebo effect. Indeed you could say that the placebo is our own natural healing capacity – and it would seem self evident that any healer, whether it is of physical or emotional pains, would want to use it.

I certainly know that the extent that a client of mine believes he/she will get better and has faith in my skills and experience, then he/she is already at first base.

But, this is what the United Kingdom Parliamentary Committee on Science and Technology has to say on the subject: : "...prescribing placebos... usually relies on some degree of patient deception" and "prescribing pure placebos is bad medicine. Their effect is unreliable and unpredictable and cannot form the sole basis of any treatment on the NHS."

So there we have it – good medicine means rejecting our natural healing capacity as bad medicine. It also explains why conventional medicine is so rarely about healing. It is really about body mending.

So what can you do to enhance your natural healing capacity?

  • Well it is not always to keep away from conventional doctors – but to always know why you are going. Is it that they have a treatment you believe will work and/or you are lucky enough to have found a doctor who understands the psychology of healing.
  • To cultivate a peaceful mind – so that you can begin to heal whenever you need to.
  • Remind yourself what does energise you in the area of health – physical activity, beauty and creativity or learning what the wise say.
  • Certainly be more aware of your body – so that you can become familiar with it and appreciate how well it works. Stay with all of the remarkable and automatic processes of your body – breathing, heart beating, blood flowing, muscles adjusting, sleep rejuvenating and so on.
    • Eckhart Tolle has written this:
Close your eyes and begin to feel the subtle life force energy in your body – in your limbs, your organs and your every cell. As you focus you will find your body becomes more and more alive. You may get a sense of its luminous quality. But always focus on the feeling – of limitlessness, formlessness and being unfathomable.

best wishes
Andrew
