Anxieties are easy to understand
Anxieties are an over sensitivity to the flight or fight response. As the box shows flight or fight is an essential part of what it is to be human and has evolved to keep us safe. But if this fear response is over active and fires when it is not needed, then this can manifest as a problem. You are at permanent risk of emotional hi-jacking. And then (and this is the crucial bit), the attempt to mitigate or cope with this will itself make the situation worse. Over-worrying, avoidance, phobic fears and panic attacks are the typical consequences to a fear response that is unravelling. And as these develop it becomes more and more difficult to live a life of balance and which works. This of course feeds the problem, as fuel on a flame.

Fear is a Puppy Dog chasing its tail
With thanks to Roger Elliot of Hypnosis DownloadsYour body feels an anxious feeling and this transmits to your mind which then looks to see why and what is going on. And what it looks for it will find which in turn will further raise the feelings. So levels continue to rise – like a dog chasing its own tail.

Man the hunted We did not survive in hostile environments by being over-confident, brash, loud animals. We survived by learning how to be quiet, timid and very, very careful. In a world where most large animals were stronger, faster, more vicious and armed with teeth or claws, the best way for humans to survive was avoidance. Safety in the modern world If you're thinking, 'Well what does this have to do with my life today?' then you're right. This heritage has left us with the ability to be scared, to scan our environment for danger and to panic. The important thing to realise is that this ability can be used habitually and inappropriately. How anxiety attacks spread For survival purposes, once we have 'learned' that a certain situation is dangerous by panicking, the mind 'remembers' this fact to ensure that the next time it sees a similar situation, it can give you the necessary response to enable you to run or fight, just like the woman in the story. This is not the normal type of 'remembering' like remembering a name or telephone number, it is the sort that makes you feel good when you hear a particular piece of music, or feel happy when you look at holiday photos, or maybe feel a bit like a kid again when you walk into school as an adult. Sloppy' Unconscious pattern matching We call this type of remembering 'unconscious pattern matching' because it is the 'back part' of your mind, the unconscious mind, that causes you to react in a certain way when it spots a particular situation or other 'trigger'. So if you have a panic attack in a car, you might feel anxious next time you are on a bus or train, because the situation is roughly similar. As far as survival goes, it is much better for us to 'err on the side of caution'.
You will know very well if your anxiety antennae are too sensitive for comfort. Do you need help to quieten things down, to get some clarity and guidance back to wellbeing?

Health Warning If there is trauma or near trauma, then the right kind of help will be better than trying to go it alone The problem is – how do you find the best help. Well Human Givens practitioners for sure and others such as EMDR practitioners can help as they understand that just talking about the trauma or simple minded cognitive challenging of trauma will never work. | Or of course Contact Me
