What makes a good Counsellor?
Audio 2 of the “What makes Good Counselling” Podcasts

The evidence is unequivocal – no model of counselling is any better than any other, but some counsellors are better. So what makes good counselling?  It is not their particular model that distinguishes them, but something else which is much more important. Learn what that might be.

So what do the researchers conclude that distinguishes the best counsellors? Here are three:

  1. They really listen to the client – what she wants and in particular understands what she believes is how she will improve.
  2. They focus on the future and change, rather than the past.
  3. They know that if good change comes it will be early rather than late in the therapy.  So they are watching out for it by using regular feedback.
